Nurul Huda Mosque in Meulaboh

The history of the flying bowl mosque

Nurul Huda Mosque is a well-known mosque in Meulaboh, because it has been built for a long time ago. Most people knew this mosque because its mystery. Who won’t be amazed by the most famous mosque in Aceh, according to my source, from one of the citizen in Meulaboh, this mosque is known by flying bowl. I ask why it is called flying bowl. Then, the citizen told that in old days this mosque usually made a lot of banquets like mauled and fasting break, so every people has one bowl of meals.  The citizen of this city will be judged as bad person if they were not bringing the bowl back. Mysteriously, the bowl will be vanished in bad people house and appear in the mosque itself but no one knows how this peculiar circumstance happened. The elder gave an imagination that this bowl flew back to the mosque. That’s why, the mosque is called flying bowl.




 Nurul Huda Mosque was founded in the 18th century in Meulaboh along with the development of city when Meulaboh was administration building, economy and religion.






The mosque was made from wood with the construction of Ulee Balang Kaway XVI firstly. The society and traders live around the mosque in village (It has been part of the city now) where Teuku Umar born.



The construction of mosque was built which was made from wood since Tjik Teuku Ali as Ulee Balang in Meulaboh who provided area and built community around the mosque in the center of Hulubalangan Ujong with the market as the center of Gembe Kehulubalangan which was trade with the office that located around distric area, then it will be Telkom area nextly.




In 1990, the mosque was made from wood, the Tameh was semi-permanent or wood that has given to Ujong Kalak mosque. There was bar in wudhu place at mosque where the terrace was as swimming pool.

In 1938, the mosque was expanded by T. Tjuk Ali Akbar with Saleh as stonemason from Ujong, after independence, it was made permanent in which the role of Regent and David Dariyah Sahim were important.

December, 26 2004, Meulaboh was destroyed by Tsunami. Nurul Huda mosque was damaged, the walls sloping north and water for the first wave that happened at 08.30 a.m. which attained 2/3 of iron window and then, the second wave that occurred at 09.30 a.m. Most people were safe in this mosque, because they relied on it as the escape place for them during the disaster.

Nurul Huda mosque’s complex has many buildings, consist of Madrasah and Tsanawiyah and STAI school of West Aceh, it belongs government and library. At the time of Tsunami, Nurul Huda mosque’s foundation signed MoU with LSM from Islamic Relief from England to built improvement the mosque with the calculation more one billion rupiah, when the government signed it, there was witness of Gupta as Head of hero, then God bless the mosque, so it can use perfectly. However, this mosque has been cleaned after Tsunami by marine.

Previously, it has built the mosque that located in village Seuneubok which was the construction began when the Regent, Drs. Malik Ridwan. The building of the mosque was able to use when Friday prayers in 2001, that’s why Nurul Huda mosque was regency mosque. However, the status of Nurul Huda mosque changed as subdistrict of Johan Pahlawan in 2001.
